Fulham withstand late rally to defeat Neasden

Fulham Irish 2-9 Neasden Gaels 2-4
Sunday, July 26 2015

Although they enjoyed total domination of the score board for 55 minutes in this 6th round league game at a wet and miserable Ruislip, Fulham had to withstand a late rally by Neasden, who were fighting to maintain their Division 1 status.
Behind on a scoreline of 2-9 to 0-3, Neasden struck 2-1 in the dying minutes in a late but futile attempt to salvage something from the game.
Fulham started the game brightly and a brace of points from Padraig Poland followed by a quick 1-1 from Danny Mc Govern saw them race to a 1-3 to 0-0 lead after 10 minutes.
Fulham had adapted better to the wet conditions and moved the ball through the attack quickly and confidently despite the slippery surface.
Neasden got off the mark with a sweetly pointed free in the 13th minute but with Fulham dominating in the centre of the park, Poland and McGovern both particularly lively and the industrious Benny Martin and Conor Sheridan orchestrating some neat link play, Fulham tagged on a further 4 points to leave the half time score 1-7 to 0-1.
Neasden got the first score of the second half with a pointed free, but sharp approach work from the Fulham lads saw Danny McGovern finish elegantly to the top right corner of the net for his second goal of the afternoon. Fulham added further points from McDermott and Poland in the 11th minute, but this was to prove their last score of the day.
Both sides toiled in the deteriorating conditions, but little headway was made by either team until Neasden’s late purple patch.
Overall a satisfactory result, setting up a mid-week head to head with KKG for a place in the league final.
